reality

this morning at 4 am i was watching the videos to get started with this project. As i tried to digest all the information my 5 year old woke up. I finish watching the last minute with her on my lap and deciding that I would have to came back later to complete it. As I sat to watch the early cartoons I realized that this child was introduced to the computer at the age of 15 months. She had her first CD-R Sesame Street and I remembering thinking that my 78 year old mother does not have the same technical knowledge that this 5 year old has now. She is expose to all the tech everywhere she goes and is very natural. She has asked for an email address a few years back she asked about what was a web page. Her 18 year old brother is always in his computer, cell, talking on texting. She was wondering if Santa this year would bring her a laptop, also a cell phone too. Her pretend play reflex this technology as she has old phones and we text and email on her Barbie lap top. Her kindergarten room has a cart with laptops that the kids are beginning to use in class. It is clear that teaching is changing and this technology is her to stay.

  1. Welcome to the class, our attempt at catching up with the youngsters. I think the youngsters have us beat because they don't hesitate when bew things are introduced. We, on the other hand, are always busy!

  2. Welcome Chiquitita, you're right of course technology is here to stay, and it is always changing! Harold's comment about us being busy is right on the money and that's the part that makes it difficult for most of us to stay up on all the changes. Many of the items I bought for the grandsons this Christmas would have been far fetched science fiction when I was in school - it never ceases to amaze me.

  3. I remember when my husband worked on a computer that filled a whole room. Now a cell phone is more powerful than that computer. My grandson still has to remind me how to work the Wii. I just don't use it enough to care. Can you even imagine what your little girl will be exposed to in her lifetime?

  4. Hello Chiquitita. I understand the little ones on the computer thing. I have two boys, ages 4 and 6, and they sometimes sneak down to the basement, turn on the computers, start internet explorer and go to noggin.com, disney.com, webkinz.com etc. Most of the time they ask for permission. Either way they know that they are only allowed to go to sites that are bookmarked - which is good for now. It is still crazy to think that they can pull all that off that my 6 year old is just now learning to read! The 4 year old can't read at all but can still navigate the internet. It is amazing. It will be interesting to see what their high school education looks like 10 years from now.
